The Factory is a hardware design lab run by students, for students in the department of Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering at McGill University. The Factory is a dedicated space in room 0080 of the Trottier building for developing personal projects, gaining experience with the latest hardware, or just brainstorming ideas with fellow students. The Factory aims to foster an environment of innovation and collaboration where the resources are provided to make your ideas become a reality.

How It Works

The Factory is open according to their office hours. Any student can drop-off during the office hours and either use the space on their own (subject to having completed the safety training and signing the waiver) or ask for assistance from a manager. The space is provided free of charge but any major consumables used by a student must be paid for (e.g. PCB printable boards). Alternatively, Factory managers can also be reached via their email.

The Factory also occasionally organizes workshops, usually geared towards beginners, to make students more familiar with electronics and programming.

Manager Recruitment

Managers are usually recruited in September for the following year. If you are interested in becoming a manager, you should either contact the ECSESS VP Tech Dev (ecsess.vptech@mcgilleus.ca) or ECSESS Facebook and Instagram pages. Alternatively you may stop by during office hours of either managers or ECSESS VP Tech Dev.

Equipment

These are some of the equipment that the Factory has:

  • PCB printer, capable of single-sided and double-sided printing (subject to availability)
  • 3D printer, specifically a Makerbot Replicator 2x(subject to filament availability, you can also bring your own compatible filament)
  • Raspberry Pi (3 Model B, 3 Model B+, 4 Model B, 0 W, 0)
  • A variety of Arduino-compatible boards (e.g. Nano, ESP32, ESP 8266, Uno, etc)
  • Logic Analyzers
  • Spectrum Analyzers
