Main Events
McGill Student Energy Summit
“By providing a collective learning platform, we believe that we can equip students with life-long skills and benefits which inspire them to become global thinkers and leaders”
Each year, we are planning on holding an annual summit at McGill University related to a topical aspect of sustainable energy. This fall, the theme of the summit is Project Design in Sustainable Energy. The goal of the summit is to inspire and create a beneficial experience for students who want to contribute to the sustainable energy transition. The summit will provide a platform and opportunity for students to gain skills and knowledge that will help them design and participate in sustainable energy related projects, which will inspire and benefit them in their future career path. The summit will consist of 3 main types of events: webinars, workshops and networking events.
Year-Long Project
The McGill Chapter is leading a year-long pilot project that will involve a team of 5 students at McGill University and global energy system experts and partners to provide access to sustainable energy for cooling in refugee camps located in Burkina Faso, Sub-Saharan Africa. As of 2020, Sustainable Energy for All reports that 1.02 billion people are still at risk from a lack of sustainable cooling access. Burkina Faso is considered a high-impact country and is currently undergoing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis which forced more than 800,000 refugees and Internally Displaced people to leave their homes due to violence from armed groups in the Sahel. The project aims to ensure the nutrition, health and safety of these vulnerable communities of survivors. Cooling for All will allow the storage of temperature-sensitive vaccines and medicine that will be critical to recover better from COVID-19, because it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Case Competition
We are also planning a case competition to engage McGill students and encourage collaboration and innovation on the topic of the year-long project.
