The Picnic Law

Bylaw 98-049 outlines regulations concerning the peace of public spaces. This includes public intoxication, open carry, busking, and more. Most importantly, this document outlines what is now commonly referred to as The Picnic Law:

3. Il est défendu de consommer des boissons alcooliques sur le domaine public, sauf :

1. dans un café-terrasse installé sur le domaine public où la vente de boissons alcooliques est autorisée par la loi;
2. à l'occasion d'un repas pris en plein air dans la partie d'un parc où la ville a installé des tables de pique-nique;
3. dans certaines circonstances ou à l'occasion d'événements, de fêtes ou de manifestations, suivant l'autorisation donnée par ordonnance.

3. It is prohibited to consume alcoholic beverages in public space, except :

1. In a cafe or terrasse set up in a public space where law permits selling alcohol;
2. Consumed with a meal in an area of a park where the city has installed picnic tables;
3. in certain circumstances at events, celebrations or demonsrations, with permission given by some authority.
